Witan was originally incepted by the United Kingdom Scout and Guide Clubs and Rovers Crews but was soon taken up by SSAGO with its creation in 1967. The first 2 events were organised by the Oxford University Scout and Guide Group at Gilwell Park in 1959 and 1961 and ran regularly almost every alternative year from then on. A full list of events can be found here.

New Beginnings

EuroJam and the 21st World Scout Jamboree reminded many members of SSAGO that International Scouting is rewarding and should be easier with modern technology such as email and social networking yet it is not pursued. In late 2007 a small team of intrepid individuals tried to bring back the Witan event and whilst they planned for a 2012 event.

This was tried in 2004, some progress was made but with the turnover of members being only 2-3 years information that is lost is hard to retrieve after that generation has graduated. This site aims to facilitate gathering information for posterity and so that future attempts might be more successful.

To this end there is a wiki attached to this website, a wiki lets anyone add and organise any information they wish to submit. It is a relatively simple process but for those less adventurous we are happy to receive a message via our contact page which we’ve kept as straight forward as possible.
